When they met Monday, members of the Leavenworth Board of Education approved a resolution supporting an organization that is planning legal action against the state.
The Leavenworth School District already was a member of Schools for Fair Funding. But board members agreed Monday to pay an increase in its membership fee to support litigation over state funding for schools.
“Let’s get the legislators to do what’s right for kids,” Kevin Gullett, chief financial officer for Leavenworth public schools, said as he reviewed budget information.
Gullett discussed the prospect of cuts to money the district receives from the Kansas government. This comes after cuts already have been in education funding in recent months as Kansas officials have tried to deal with budget shortfalls.
Gullett said Leavenworth school officials are making reductions in order to deal with the cuts in state funding. But the officials will reach a point when they no longer will be able to make cuts.
The Leavenworth district was a member of Schools for Fair Funding when the group sponsored a lawsuit that resulted in increases in education funding earlier this decade.
