An insurance company in Leavenworth is celebrating its 125th anniversary this month.

Employees of Armed Forces Insurance will be celebrating the company’s birthday Tuesday at its headquarters in Leavenworth, according to Lori Simmons, AFI’s director of marketing and public relations.

“This is an incredible quasquicentennial anniversary,” retired Marine Lt. Gen. Garry L. Parks, chairman of AFI’s Board of Directors, said in a news release.

AFI was founded in 1887 at Fort Leavenworth although it originally was called the Army Co-operative Fire Association, according to a history provided by Simmons.

Among the association’s founders was then Capt. Arthur MacArthur Jr., father of future Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

The sole purpose of the association in 1887 was to insure loss from fire.
But today AFI provides additional types of insurance coverage. Simmons said the company has more than 200 employees. It serves military personnel and veterans as well as Department of Defense civilians employees.

“AFI remains well positioned to continue to deliver personalized service for many years into the future,” Parks said in a release.

AFI still has an office at Fort Leavenworth, but its headquarters are located on Eisenhower Road in Leavenworth.

Simmons said Tuesday’s birthday celebrations will be informal events for employees. Tuesday will mark the official anniversary of the establishment of the organization.
