To the city government, it’s considered a code violation. But to officials at the First City Museum, it’s a piece of history.

The museum recently was sent a letter indicating a railroad boxcar that’s under restoration violates a zoning ordinance concerning accessory buildings.

“It’s not a building,” said Del Sanders, president of the Leavenworth Historical Museum Association. “It’s an artifact.”

The narrow gauge boxcar, which is believed to have been built in the 1870s, sits in front of the First City Museum at 743 Delaware St.

Sanders said the boxcar is believed to have been used by the Kansas Central Railroad, which originated in Leavenworth.
