It may be hard to get hired in the current economy. But teacher Linda Thompson said her former students have been able to find jobs after completing computer networking classes at Leavenworth High School.
Thompson said the high school has one of only a few Cisco networking academies in the state. She said the name Cisco comes from Cisco Systems, which manufactures computer networking equipment.
After passing four semesters of classes offered at the high school, students can take a Cisco Certified Network Association exam.
“If they pass that, they then can go right out and get jobs,” Thompson said.
If students obtain the certification, employers know what their skill level is, she said.
She said the jobs can pay annual salaries ranging between $30,000 and $60,000.
With additional education, students can achieve a higher level of certification.
Thompson said a 2009 Leavenworth High School graduate went directly to work for Cisco Systems. Another former graduate works in naval security.
Thompson said the program at the high school started in 2002.
She said the number of students in the classes are low because the courses are hard. She said taking the classes is like learning a new language.
“We’re teaching some pretty advanced stuff up here,” she said.
Thompson said the reading that’s required is at a pretty high level.
She said the subject material “used to be thought of as kind of a nerdy thing.” But the students taking the classes are active in a lot of things.
Thompson said her students in the past have competed in events through the SkillsUSA program. This year, they will be competing in events as part of the Future Business Leaders of America program.
