With two months before Christmas, the Salvation Army is beginning early on its annual Red Kettle campaign, putting out a call for volunteers at its locations throughout the city.

Capt. Mark Nance with the Leavenworth Salvation Army said the organization is aiming higher this year than in the past, with a total goal of $72,500 for the campaign. That’s about $10,000 more than 2008’s drive.

A large portion of the proceeds from the campaign will fund operating costs for the Salvation Army in Leavenworth.

The bells will start on Nov. 20 in most of the locations around the city, with a Nov. 27 start date at the Walmart in Leavenworth. The campaign will end on Christmas Eve.

Because of economic hardship that is bringing in more people seeking assistance for the first time and the fact that the United Way of Leavenworth County did not meet its goal last year, Nance said the Salvation Army had to cut expenses and apply some of the funds raised from its annual auction to basic social service programs.
