A Leavenworth man who allegedly pointed a gun at two women was able to elude police Thursday afternoon even after crashing into a vehicle, a police spokesman said.
The 20-year-old suspect allegedly pointed a gun at his 25-year-old girlfriend and forced her to get into a car with him. He drove around and saw his ex-girlfriend, an 18-year-old woman, at 11th Street and Metropolitan Avenue, according to Maj. Robert Smith, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.
The man reportedly drove along side of his ex-girlfriend and pointed the weapon at her.
“He made some comment about, ‘You can’t hide,’” Smith said.
The 18-year-old woman came to the police station shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday to report the incident.
Police officers were asked to locate the suspect. An officer spotted the man driving a 2002 Chevrolet Impala, according to Smith.
The officer followed the vehicle and attempted to stop it in the 700 block of Seneca Street.
“The driver fled west on Seneca Street, running the stop sign on Broadway,” Smith said.
He said the Impala struck a northbound 2000 Mercury car on Broadway.
The suspect reportedly continued to flee in the Impala and headed north. An officer continued to pursue the suspect while another officer stopped at the scene of the crash, Smith said.
The suspect stopped the car in an alley north of Miami Street and allegedly fled on foot. He was pursued by police but was able to get away, according to Smith.
The man’s girlfriend reportedly was still in the vehicle when it was stopped in the alley. An pursuing officer was focused on the suspect and did not notice the woman, Smith said.
She later reported to police that she waited in the vehicle, which was registered to her, for a few minutes. She then walked to her home where she contacted authorities.
Three people were in the car that was struck on Broadway. None of them reported injuries, but they were examined at the scene by Leavenworth County EMS personnel, Smith said.
“The suspect is identified,” Smith said. “We are still looking for him.”
