A Tonganoxie area couple have been ordered to pay $4,000 in fines and placed on probation for hosting parties in which minors were drinking alcohol.

Richard and Julie Whaler were sentenced Wednesday in Leavenworth County. Each had pleaded no contest last month to two counts of unlawfully hosting minors who were consuming alcohol. The crimes occurred in October and February.

Other charges against the couple were dismissed.

When sentencing Julie Whaler, 47, District Judge Gunnar Sundby imposed a minimum fine of $1,000 for each of two counts of unlawfully hosting minors.
Sundby imposed the same fine for each of the two counts against Richard Whaler, 44.

Both Whalers also were placed on probation for a year.

County Attorney Todd Thompson said $4,000 is a lot of money for any household to pay. He said the fines may act as a deterrent for others.
