Some Leavenworth High School students have been going back to elementary school.

Members of the high school’s Leadership Class tutor fourth-graders at Anthony Elementary School.

Senior Barbara Serrano, a high school student who was tutoring at Anthony Thursday, said she helps fourth-graders one-on-one with their reading. She said the younger pupils are glad to have the help from the high school students.

“You get to see their faces smiling all the time,” Serrano said.

Senior Preston Padgett, who also was tutoring at Anthony Thursday, said the program shows how high schools students are involved not only at their school but elsewhere.

Students from the high school work with children from three fourth-grade classes.

“The high school students are wonderful role models,” said Kathryn Schiller, one of the fourth-grade teachers at Anthony.

She said the positive interaction with the high school students means a lot to the fourth-graders and “does wonders for their self-esteem.”

Members of the Leadership Class visit Anthony three times a week to provide tutoring. Serrano said they started visiting the elementary school two months ago.

Padgett said Leadership Class students also provided tutoring at Anthony during the 2010-2011 school year.

The high school students work with the younger pupils in chairs placed in a hallway just outside of the fourth-grade classrooms. Schiller said she is able to continue her classroom instruction as individual students step out to receive help from the teenagers.

Fourth-graders read aloud to the high school students Thursday and received help when they struggled with words.
