An inmate has died after being assaulted last week at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, a Fort Leavenworth spokeswoman said.
Michael Fricke had been hospitalized since the July 24 incident at the fort’s military prison. He died at about 11:50 a.m. Thursday after his family authorized having him taken off of life support, according to fort spokeswoman Rebecca Steed.
Michael Fricke was a prison trusty who had been incarcerated 16 years for murder. He was injured during an altercation with another military prisoner at a secured recreation field as several inmates played sports.
Fricke was struck with a baseball bat before the alleged assailant was detained by corrections officers, according to Steed.
The alleged assailant has been secured away from other inmates, and the incident is said to still be under investigation.
The prison has been on lockdown status since the incident, according to Steed.
The USDB is the only maximum-security prison in the Department of Defense, however it also houses minimum- and medium-security military prisoners from all branches of service.
