Even though it’s been three weeks since she learned Anthony Elementary School would receive $10,000 for its music program, Laura Moyers is still in shock.

Moyers, the school’s music teacher, said an oversized check presented to Anthony Friday “makes it more real.”

The teacher accepted the check during a school assembly. It was presented by Avian Bear, president-elect for the Kansas Music Educators Association. She presented the check on behalf of the National Association for Music Education, which was a sponsor of the “GLEE Give a Note” contest.

Anthony was of 60 schools to be awarded a $10,000 second-place prize in the nationwide competition.

“You were the only school in Kansas to receive this award,” Bear told Anthony students Friday.

For the contest, Anthony officials submitted a video that featured Principal Bernice Gregory talking about the school’s music program. The video also featured students Aiden Walter and Keenan Brown playing an original composition on xylophones.

The contest included a online voting period during which members of the public could cast votes for video entries. Videos then were judged by professional music educators.

Officials at Anthony learned Dec. 15 that the school had been awarded the $10,000 prize.

During Friday’s assembly, Moyers recognized others at the school including Gregory and Jeff Reed, a building technician who helped with the video.

“All three of us went crazy one day and we made it happen,” she said.

Moyers said after the assembly that the money awarded to Anthony may be used to purchase equipment for recording students’ music on compact discs.

“So we’re hoping the kids can make their own CDs,” she said.

She said the money also may be used to purchase T-shirts or vests for a school choir.
