A man’s truck was stolen Thursday in Leavenworth. But the alleged thief was captured after he tried to go to the victim’s home, a police spokesman said.
The theft was reported at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Fourth and Spruce streets.
The victim, a 61-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man, was working at a construction site and had left his keys in his 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, according Maj. Robert Smith, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.
Smith said someone drove away in the truck 10 to 15 minutes before the theft was reported.
A police officer responded and learned the victim had personal papers and others items in the truck that indicated where he lived. The officer suggested the victim have someone check his residence because the thief had the victim’s keys.
“The victim called his brother who went to check his house in Kansas City,” Smith said.
While at the house, the brother saw the stolen truck approaching. He called the police.
The Kansas City, Kan., police stopped the truck and took one person into custody, according to Smith.
The truck and its contents were returned to the owner.
Smith said a person should never leave keys in a vehicle. The deputy chief also said people should try to avoid leaving personal information in their vehicles.
