Leavenworth public officials still don’t know how much will be cut from state education funding for the next school year.

But the local school officials are now planning to cut at least $1.9 million from the district’s budget and utilize $150,000 from a contingency reserve.

Kevin Gullett, chief financial officer for the school district, provided a budget update Wednesday during a special meeting of the Leavenworth Board of Education.

Board members also discussed aspects of the relationship between the board and superintendent.

Gullett said district officials are preparing for a $369 cut to the amount of funding the state pays for each student. The state government currently pays a base amount of 4,012 per student.

Gullett noted that the Kansas Association of School Boards has suggested a worst case scenario could include a $600 per pupil cut.

“I do not believe that’s a realistic number to work with,” he said.

He said this scenario would mean a “catastrophic failure for the state.”
