No injuries were reported following a fire Wednesday evening in Leavenworth, a Fire Department spokesman said.
The fire, which was reported at 6:19 p.m. Wednesday at 2810 Maple Ave., is being blamed on discarded cigarettes. It started in the upper level of the house, according to fire Capt. Shawn Kell.
When the first crew of firefighters arrived on the scene, they checked around the outside of the house, looking for people at the windows.
“There was nobody home at the time,” Kell said.
Smoke could be seen coming from the upper level of the house near the back of the residence.
As additional firefighters arrived on the scene, the first crew was forcing open the front door. They made their way upstairs and found the fire.
“They hit the fire with their attack (hose) line,” Kell said.
He said the firefighters “knocked down” the flames. They removed drywall and ceiling to check for fires burning in hidden areas. He said fire was discovered behind walls.
