The number of crimes reported in Leavenworth dropped 12.5 percent in 2009.

That is according to figures provided in an annual report prepared by members of the Leavenworth Police Department.

Last year, 4,882 crimes were reported to the department. That’s 700 fewer than in 2008.

“We’ve actually seen over the last several years a pretty steady decline,” Police Chief Pat Kitchens said.

But he said the single-year decrease seen in 2009 was a “pretty substantial drop.”
