With Veterans Day just around the corner, the time to salute those who served in the military is here.
Though the soldiers at the front lines get a lot of the attention, William Worley, an instructor of history at Metropolitan Community College-Blue River and part-time history instructor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, said there are a number of others who served other important roles during times of war.
The 77th Evacuation Hospital at the University of Kansas Medical Center is one of the stories of those less well-known servicemen and women.
Sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council, a presentation by Worley scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lansing Historical Museum will focus on the 77th and its work during World War II.
The “Band of Sisters,” as Worley’s presentation is called, in that unit were nurses from Kansas who mostly had connections to KU, and Worley said a lot of their story remains from letters and photographs.
