While a local teen was the victim of a carjacking a few weeks ago in a neighboring county, officials say such incidents aren’t being reported in Leavenworth County.

“I haven’t heard of it occurring here,” said Maj. Ron Cranor, Leavenworth County undersheriff.

Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department, said he also can’t recall any similar incidents.

The carjacking, which involved a 17-year-old Leavenworth boy, was reported Dec. 29 in Platte County, Mo.

The teen had been stopped at railroad tracks at the intersection of Missouri 45 and 45 Spur when a red vehicle with at least two occupants pulled in front of him. One of the occupants had what appeared to be a handgun and told the teen to get out of his car, which he did. Both vehicles then were driven away by the culprits. The teen had been driving a rental car, according to Capt. Erik Holland with the Platte County Sheriff’s Office.

“That case is still under investigation,” Holland said.

And while their departments haven’t been seeing such crimes reported,
Nicodemus and Cranor suggested that people be aware of their surroundings.

“People have to be vigilant all the time,” Cranor said.

Nicodemus said it’s not a bad idea for one to keep his doors locked while traveling in a car.

And in an age when cell phones are common, Nicodemus said it doesn’t hurt to “have a phone handy” in case there’s a problem.

If one is a victim of a crime, Cranor recommends paying attention to details that later will help to provide adequate descriptions of suspects as well as things such as their vehicles.
