Over the past few years, advances in technology have made privacy for schools an issue, according to Lansing School Superintendent Randy Bagby.

During a meeting on Monday, Bagby and Board of Education Member Richard Whitlow presented members of the Lansing Board of Education with information on the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act.

“We want people to be aware that if it’s on the Internet, it’s not private,” Bagby said.

It’s an issue that he said the board discusses, but perhaps not often enough. With developments like Facebook and other social networking sites, the possibility that private information about students could be leaked is an increasing concern. Whitlow told the members that FERPA is similar to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act that governs medical records in the measures it uses to keep confidential information confidential.
