Even now, looking at “Flora Elena,” Doris Morelock Hendrickson and Theresa Ward said they never expected to make it as far as they did.
The brightly colored flowers on its appliquéd top, as well as the intricate, detailed quilting on its surface, earned the pair recent honors at the Machine Quilters Showcase in Overland Park, Kan., as well as a first-place ribbon in the traditional bed quilt category at the American Quilter’s Society’s recent Quilt Expo 2009 October in Des Moines, Iowa.
Flora Elena, named after both the brilliant flowers on its quilt-top and the shared middle name of three people Hendrickson said were special in her life, was two years in the making.
“The work that’s in there is very tiny and detailed,” Ward said. “(The quilt) took a lot more time than I do normally.”
Hendrickson, of Basehor, and Ward, a part-time bus driver and quilter-for-hire from rural Lansing, met during a meeting of the Sunflower Piecemakers Quilt Guild, one of the groups made up of quilters in the Leavenworth area.
