Dust settles on county program

For more than a decade, Leavenworth County’s public works department has offered residents a chance to minimize the amount of dust on unpaved roads.

However, as director of public works Mike Spickelmier told the commission on Monday, the dust control program was “heavily subsidized” by the county.

As a cost cutting measure during the 2009 budget cycle, Spickelmier said his department eliminated the program completely for the 2010 budget, saving about $75,000 in fiscal year 2010.

Those crew members who performed the work, offered during the summer months, have since been deployed elsewhere.

Spickelmier said residents who live on unpaved roads will still be able to get assistance in dust abatement. But from now on he said public works will only point residents to other third parties who offer the service.
