The deputy county clerk is running for county treasurer.
Janice Dickson, 46, Leavenworth, filed Wednesday as a Republican candidate for the office of Leavenworth County treasurer.
She decided to run after the current Treasurer Janice Young said she wouldn’t be seeking re-election this year.
“I would never run against Janice because she does a wonderful job,” Dickson said of the current office holder.
Dickson said she received encouragement to file for treasurer from Young and County Clerk Janet Klasinski.
Dickson has served as deputy county clerk for three years. She previously spent seven years working as the executive secretary for the Board of County Commissioners.
Dickson said she’s pretty knowledgeable about what happens in the County Treasurer’s Office.
She has worked with officials from the county, cities, schools and townships as they’ve filed their budgets in the County Clerk’s Office. And it’s from these budgets, as well as assessed valuations, that mill levies are determined and implemented by the county treasurer in the form of collection and disbursement.
Dickson also works with the County Treasurer’s Office balancing day-to-day receipts and disbursements.
“We have a check and balance system,” she said.
She said the County Treasurer’s Office will be converting to new software for a statewide motor vehicle registration program. And she wants to work with Young on the implementation.
“So I kind of would like to be in on it from the ground up,” she said.
Dickson said much of what the county treasurer does is defined by state law, but she can place focus on the area of customer service.
Last year, she completed all requirements for the Sanborn Institute, Center of Urban Studies, Wichita State University, and is recognized as a certified county clerk in Kansas. This year, she is scheduled to attend WSU’s Master Academy of Continuing Education.
So far, Dickson is the only person to have filed for the office of county treasurer.
