On Thursday, the Leavenworth County Commission reviewed a Special Development District along County Road 1, another step in the process of preparing the area for possible economic growth.

The decision comes after months of talks about the district, its boundaries and what it should contain.

Commissioner John Flower said there are two areas in the district that are under consideration — the first, smaller area would be subject to the building codes of the city of Tonganoxie, which include things like the construction of curbs and gutters; the second, 2-by-6-mile long stretch would be controlled by the county’s standards.

The measure is meant to create conditions for growth for the county, Flower said, both for commercial and residential developments. Some of the conditions included in the plan are stipulations on acceptable uses, design standards and a requirement of 10 acres for development.

Flower said over the course of discussions with the city of Tonganoxie, the first area has been expanded to include more land.

However, he said the new boundaries simplify rather than complicate the matter.
