It’s not certain whether the Leavenworth school district will be awarded a federal grant for storm shelters at a new athletic complex, even though bids for the work already have been approved.
The issue was raised Friday during a special meeting of the Leavenworth Board of Education.
Mike Vieux, senior project manager for JE Dunn Construction, said there should be enough money budgeted for a bond issue to pay for the shelters even if the district doesn’t receive a grant for more than $1 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
JE Dunn is providing construction manager services for bond issue projects.
Similar grants have been approved for including what are referred to as “safe rooms” as part of the bond issue construction at Leavenworth High School, Anthony and David Brewer elementary schools, and the new Henry Leavenworth Elementary School.
