Beginning in April this year, the church partnered with the St. Joseph, Mo., based Second Harvest Food Bank.
Rachel Graves, development director for Second Harvest, said the partnership with the church is just the latest for Leavenworth County. Last year, Second Harvest and its partners distributed more than 106,000 pounds of food to those meeting poverty guidelines the area. According to Graves, Second Harvest also provides help to organizations that do not distribute food. Right now, she said the organization works with the Alliance Against Family Violence, the Leavenworth Assistance Center, the Youth Achievement Center, Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church, The Women’s Community Y, the Apostolic Church of Hope and Faith Christian International.
Second Harvest as a whole has more than 100 such partnerships in 19 counties in northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri.
Anderson said the pantry is open from 9 to 11 a.m. each Tuesday and from noon to 2 p.m. every Thursday at the church, located at 1701 Fifth Ave. in Leavenworth.
However, in the case of emergencies, volunteers said they will always find time to help.
