Man killed in crash

A man was killed Tuesday as the result of a crash in Platte County, Mo., according to a Sheriff’s Department news release.

George H. Wheeler Jr., 21, DeKalb, Mo., died as a result of a crash that occurred at about 9:44 a.m. Tuesday west of Dearborn, Mo., on H Highway.

Wheeler was a passenger in an eastbound 1993 Ford F-150 flatbed truck that apparently veered off the road and struck a bridge. The vehicle caught fire after the impact, according to the release.

The truck’s driver, a 49-year-old Atchison man, was transported by ambulance to the hospital, according to the release.

Neither occupant had been wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the accident was said to be under investigation. There is no indication at this time of driver impairment or mechanical defect.
