The Leavenworth Board of Education will not be making a statement about the superintendent or take any action regarding her “at this time,” the board president said Monday.

John Chapman said this was based on advice from an attorney for the school district.

The board president’s comments came in the aftermath of the arrest of Superintendent Kelly Harris Sept. 26 in Parkville, Mo., for suspicion of drunken driving.

Chapman’s statement was made at the end of Monday night’s school board meeting. He said Harris had asked him to add that an attorney has given her essentially the same advice.

The remarks came after board members met behind closed doors for 20 minutes to discuss personnel matters.

Before the statement was issued by Chapman, board member Nancy Klemp said she had spoken to two attorneys from outside of the school district.

She said the attorneys indicated there was no problem with board members taking action on the superintendent in response to an alleged infraction.
