The River City Community Players are preparing to go Hollywood starting Friday.
The Leavenworth-based theater organization is finishing up rehearsals for “From the Hollywood with Love — Part 2.”
Penny Paradies, the show’s associate director, said the show, developed from an idea by Director Donna Elmer, will be a sort of companion piece to an earlier youth production, “From Hollywood with Love.” In that production, the cast presented scenes from movies spanning the history of the RCCP’s venue, the Hollywood Theater in downtown Leavenworth.
The second part, with a cast of about 28 people from around the area, takes a bit of a different approach, Paradies said.
“This one is all songs from movies,” she said.
The Hollywood Theater, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1990, was used as a movie theater in the city from 1938 until 1977, according to the National Park Service website. Paradies said “From Hollywood with Love 2” features songs, with musical direction by Catherine Hammer, taken from films in each of those decades, from George Gershwin to “Godspell.”
“There’s a great variety — we have everything from solos to large ensemble pieces,” she said.
The revue is also a fundraiser for the RCCP — Paradies said donations at the door will take the place of tickets and there will be no reserved seating. In the past the suggested donation has been $5 but she said patrons are asked to give what they can.
The revues in previous years have helped the RCCP replace the seats in the theater and install a wireless microphone system and sound equipment. Paradies said the RCCP board has discussed adding to that setup.
“We’d like to add more mics to the system then we have right now,” she said.
That would help avoid the necessity of switching mics backstage between performers.
Doors for “From the Hollywood with Love 2” will open at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with the curtain time of 8 p.m. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. for Sunday’s matinee, with the show beginning at 2 p.m.
