School officials want students to focus on character.

When they met Monday, members of the Leavenworth Board of Education were presented information about a proposed character program.

Organizers said the program, which has not yet been named, would be used in schools. But it also would be a community program. A community steering committee has been formed.

Board members gave permission for Carol Ayres, grant writer for the district, to apply for a Sprint Character Education Grant to help pay for the program.

But board members asked for the program to be brought back for approval before it is implemented.
