Since July 2009, the Leavenworth County Port Authority’s trails committee has been meeting to try to solidify a new countywide trails plan.

On Monday, members of the committee, made up of members of he various communities throughout Leavenworth County, presented to the Leavenworth County Commission what they said would be the next step in the process — sending out a request for proposals for an engineering plan for the non-motorized trails plan.

The project was submitted by Chris Dunn, planning and community development director for the city of Leavenworth, for inclusion on the Mid-America Regional Council’s Transportation Outlook 2040 Plan.

The project was given 69 out of 100 points, a higher score than other bicycle and pedestrian trail plans from Olathe, Mission and Lenexa, Kan., according to an evaluation sheet from MARC.
