The low rumble resembling electronic hum and a high-pitched melodic whistling — neither are tones one might normally expect the human body to make.
But they are — they come from the same person, sometimes at the same time. The four members of the Alash Ensemble, a musical group from the republic of Tuva on the southern edge of Siberia, perform these vocal gymnastics and others in their live performances.
Last year, the Carnegie Arts Center in Leavenworth brought the group to the city for a performance. This year, they will be doing the same thing — this time through a partnership with the Lansing Educational Foundation.
Carnegie Arts Center Executive Director Carolyn Singleton said the group’s concert, in which they use traditional Tuvan instruments in addition to their voices, needs to be seen — and heard — to be believed.
“It’s just a pure sound,” she said.
The group will perform at 7 p.m. March 25 in the Lansing School District Auditorium at Lansing High School.
