Leavenworth firefighters have been unable to determine what started a fire early Thursday morning at a house on Michigan Street, a Fire Department spokesman said.

This was the fifth house fire Leavenworth firefighters have responded to this month. None have been blamed on arson.

Thursday’s fire was reported at 12:23 a.m. at 755 Michigan St.

“Nobody was hurt,” Leavenworth Assistant Fire Chief Mark Nietzke said.

He said no one apparently had stayed in the two-story home for more than a year but the owners still had a lot of contents inside the house.

Nietzke said it appears the fire started in the area of the home’s back porch.

“It probably took us an hour and a half to get the thing out,” Nietzke said of the fire.

He said the amount of contents in the home was an issue when fighting the fire. He said firefighters “had an awful hard time getting around.”

About six off-duty Leavenworth firefighters were called in to help with the fire. Fort Leavenworth firefighters also provided assistance at the scene.

Members of Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1 stood by at their station in Lansing to answer calls in the city of Leavenworth while firefighters were tied up at the scene on Michigan Street, according to Nietzke.

A crew of Leavenworth firefighters stayed at the scene for the rest of the night in case the fire rekindled.

Nietzke said electricity and natural gas service to the home was turned off Thursday.

Firefighters did not have a dollar estimate for the loss. Leavenworth Assistant Fire Chief Mike Lingenfelser said the house had structural damage.

Five house fires have bee reported in the city since Jan. 4.

“I think it’s dumb luck,” Lingenfelser said of the rash of fires.
