Get pets spayed or neutered. It’s that simple.

Still, large numbers of animals end up in shelters each year, according to Andrea Mamuax of the Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society. According to statistics from LAWS President Ann Divine, an animal is euthanized every 8 seconds somewhere in the United States.

Mamux said last year was an especially tough year for the Leavenworth Animal Control Shelter, which serves all of Leavenworth County. She volunteers at the shelter and said the facility received baskets of puppies and groups of kittens and took in several pregnant female dogs  that later gave birth, all of which put a strain on its capacity.

“All these things can be prevented and should be prevented,” she said.

After some brainstorming, Mamaux said LAWS’ members came up with a solution. Starting with this week’s edition of the Chronicle Shopper, she said there are coupons that will be printed the first week of each month through May. They can be redeemed before the expiration date by any Leavenworth County resident for any number of animals to receive a free spay or neuter procedure from the Johnson County-based Pet Connection, who agreed to include a free rabies vaccination with an appointment. According to Mamaux, the program is already proving popular.
