On Feb. 25, the Leavenworth County Commission decided to let a charter resolution expire that named them as the sponsor for a proposed Leavenworth County regional airport and business park — but the issue itself is far from dead.
On Thursday, the issue was revisited in order for the commissioners to discuss how to proceed. The commissioners had previously agreed to let the charter resolution, which was thought to be a requirement by the Federal Aviation Administration for future grant funding on airport studies, become null in void by inaction instead of calling for a special election.
Commissioner John Flower said on Thursday that while the commission did agree to let that resolution die and take no action until a vote was taken, they did not address bringing the situation to the attention of the FAA.
He said he would like to let the FAA know of the commission’s actions and ask how to proceed in the airport study process and whether the resolution was needed to move to the next step in the airport process, the site selection study. Later in Thursday’s meeting, the commission got its answer — in the form of correspondence from the FAA to Heather Morgan, county administrator, that stated the commission does not need a charter resolution for the planning stages of the airport process — only the construction phase.
The commission tabled any further discussion for 10 a.m. Monday.
