Organizers of a model train show are hoping to attract people to Leavenworth museums and downtown in general.

Models Trains & More will be held Oct. 22 and 23 at the First City Museum, 743 Delaware St. And organizers are cross-promoting the event with the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum, 320 S. Esplanade St.

“Hopefully it’s the first of many,” said Mike Hersh, coordinator for the event.
The event is being sponsored by the Leavenworth Historical Museum Association and Leavenworth Main Street Program.

“Leavenworth has had a lot of train history,” said Del Sanders, president of the Leavenworth Historical Museum Association.

The centerpiece of the event will be a train display at the First City Museum, according to Hersh.

The display was created by Miles and Fran Hale, who said it depicts a train route from Chicago to Dodge City. The display includes models of Leavenworth buildings.

The Hales said they’re also making a smaller display for the upcoming event.

Fran Miles said model railroading allows a person to “create you own world.”

There will be other activities in conjunction with the model train displays including a train mystery. Hersh described this activity, which will be available only Oct. 22, as a train scavenger hunt.

“Kids of any age can take part in it,” Hersh said.

He said displays will be set up at three locations. The displays will have clues for solving a mystery.
