1. Have you always been a bicyclist?
Always, definitely always. I had my first race in 1973 as a kid. I spent 10 years in the army, but my dream was to open a bike shop.
2. Where did the idea for a bicycle and coffee shop come from?
When I was in the army, my family and I would go to different towns, and I would always search out the best bike shop and the best coffee shop. My family always said, “Another bike shop? Another coffee shop?” I figured if I could put the two together, we wouldn’t have to make all those trips.
3. How long has Santa Fe Trails been open? Have any of the staff members been here since the opening?
The shop has been open for 14 years, and I’ve been here since the beginning. Lamont (Ealey, the mechanic) has been here for seven years, same as Todd Frederick. We’ve had quite a graduating class, literally, too. We’ve had Immaculata students, Leavenworth students, some from Pleasant Ridge, and Lansing students too. They’ve worked here, then graduated, but we keep in touch with them.
4. How active is the Santa Fe Trails race team?
The team has been racing all year long. We had a time trial this spring in Gardner, we’ve done some road racing in Columbia, Mo., Herman, Mo., and Perry, Kan. Our big event will is the CycloCross Race, which we’re sponsoring on September 23 (Buffalo Bill Weekend).
5. Besides the race team events, how else does Santa Fe Trails participate in the community?
Participating with the community is very important to us. We offer a rides to everyone three nights a week — Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday at 6 p.m. Anybody can ride, and the only rule is that you must wear a helmet. We also offer (bike) trips for kids through the Youth Achievement Center every Wednesday afternoon, for free. The bikes are provided by Trek and the Leavenworth community. With Leavenworth Parks and Recreation, we sponsor free children’s races (ages 1-12), coming up on June 15, July 6 and July 27 at Warren Middle School. The races start at 6:45 p.m., and registration is at 6:15. Adult races will follow at 7:30 p.m.
