Suspected drunken driver turns out to be diabetic

A man suspected of being a drunken driver turned out to be a diabetic with low blood sugar, according to a report from the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident was reported at 2:15 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 24-40 west of 174th Street.

Deputies were sent to that area to investigate a report of a possible intoxicated driver. A Dodge truck reportedly had been seen swerving all over the road.

Deputies located the Dodge Dakota in the area of U.S. 24-40 and 198th Street. Officers behind the vehicle observed the truck cross the center of the roadway several times, according to the report.

Officers tried to stop the truck, but the driver failed to yield to the deputies. The truck was traveling at about 20 mph, according to the report.

The driver eventually pulled over. The 48-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man appeared to be disoriented.

Officers did not smell the odor of alcoholic beverages when visiting with the man, according to the report.

Deputies asked the man if he is diabetic, and he indicated he is. Leavenworth County EMS personnel and Tonganoxie firefighters were called to the scene.

EMS personnel checked the man’s blood sugar level, and it was extremely low, according to the report.

The man was provided with a dose of glucose and his blood sugar level normalized, according to the report.
