Leavenworth, Kan. -

The future direction of road projects in the county were reviewed on Thursday during a work session between the Leavenworth County Commission and the county’s public works department.

Mike Spickelmier, director of county public works, said the meeting was a chance to prioritize the projects that the county might want to undertake in the next five years. He also said he realized that the hopes to complete the projects might outweigh the means available to accomplish them.

“You’re going to see some very large numbers on here,” Spickelmier told the commissioners. “But you’ll also understand that we understand that we are only establishing priority, we are not funding or programming at this time.”

However, Spickelmier said the priorities can act as a guide when and if funding does become available from state, federal or local sources.

Commission Chairman John Flower said after looking at the list submitted by public works that he thought the capital improvements program should lead to more roadway connections in the county.

“I just see some holes and I don’t know why,” he said.
