A combination of elements related to detainee interrogations in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks resulted in a “perfect storm,” the consequences of which are still being felt, according to a retired military intelligence officer.
Stuart Herrington spoke about interrogation Tuesday as part of the Fort Leavenworth Ethics Symposium.
This week’s symposium is the first to be co-sponsored by the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the CGSC Foundation, according to Mark Wiggins, director of the communications for the foundation.
“Our goal, in this first of a series of symposia, is to initiate a dialogue as an integral part of professional military education on contemporary ethical and legal issues faced by military leaders,” officials wrote in a letter to symposium participants.
The letter was signed by Brig. Gen. Edward C. Cardon, acting commandant of the CGSC, and Robert Ulin, chief executive officer of the CGSC Foundation.
The symposium began Monday with registration and a reception. It was scheduled to wrap up today.
Wiggins said participants include CGSC students and faculty, foundation trustees and people from military academies.
During his remarks, Herrington said brutality, abuse and torture have no role in real interrogation.
