The Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office was unable to use its normal radio channels Wednesday. But this wasn’t a cause for alarm, the undersheriff said.

Ron Cranor said the county’s radio system is “deeply affiliated” with the Kansas Department of Transportation. And KDOT officials had notified the county they needed to temporarily take down the system as part of a radio rebanding process.

“They’ve planned this out with us,” the undersheriff said.

He said the Sheriff’s Office and other agencies in the county that would have been impacted were able to utilize other channels Wednesday.

The city of Leavenworth uses a different radio system.

Cranor said the ability of the Sheriff’s Office to handle 911 calls was not affected.

“Services to the public should go right on as they are,” he said.

Members of the public may have noticed a truck with a trailer that had a radio tower and satellite dish parked outside of the Justice Center. Cranor said this unit was helping with the radio communications while the normal system was down.

Cranor said things may have been back to normal as early as Wednesday evening.
