The annual Cancerthon bicycle race on Saturday at Abeles Field in Leavenworth had some snow and freezing temperatures — exactly what its organizers were expecting.
Brendan Sheehan, owner of the Santa Fe Trails Bicycle Shop, said the race, now a marathon around the track at Abeles Field, has been going on for 11 years. Before it was an outdoor event, he said the participants would race on bike trainers inside for 24 hours.
Though the race on Saturday lasted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sheehan said because of what sometimes have been cold temperatures, participating can still be grueling.
“The cold and the snow and everything make it an epic kind of a race,” he said.
