March marks International Women’s History Month, and students at Lansing Elementary School learned first-hand on Thursday about the strides women have made over the years.
Throughout the day, female officers attending the Command and General Staff College on Fort Leavenworth gave presentations for the students about how roles for women in the military have changed over the years.
Maj. Jessica Cranford told a group of students that women originally served as nurses, although over the years the options for service were expanded with the establishment of the Women’s Army Corps in 1942, which was eliminated in 1978 when women were allowed to serve alongside men. In the 12 years she has been in the Army, Cranford said opportunities have continued to open up for females.
“Even now, things are changing a lot,” she said.
