The Pleasant Ridge cross country team got off to a soggy start on Thursday, running through rain after waiting out a storm at the Basehor-Linwood Invitational. The Rams weathered the tough conditions though, freshman Rachel Hattok setting a new school record in the varsity girls’ race to medal along with teammates Kayla Lansing and Sarah Ling while both Keith Edmonds and Daniel Broaddus both earned medals for the boys’ varsity.
Hattok clocked a time of 17 minutes 42 seconds in the Thursday race, her first for the Pleasant Ridge cross country team, placing seventh. Lansing, a junior, and Ling, a sophomore, joined Haddock in the top 25 to earn medals. Finalized places weren’t available at press time.
After a lightning delay, Edmonds ran to eighth in his first race of his senior campaign and junior Broaddus came across in 20th.
On the whole, head coach Chad Hendrix said he was pleased with how his squad handled themselves in the season opener.
“I thought they ran really well and came out and really put down good times even though the footing wasn’t real good,” Hendrix said. “They battled.”
Putting up solid times, Hendrix added, was all the more impressive due to the course conditions.
“The course was very muddy, it was raining the whole time,” he said. “We had to stop due to lightning and the boys had to wait around for an hour before they ran. But the kids ran really hard and competed very well.”
In the junior varsity races, the Rams got two more medals. Sarah Wagner and Bethany Gates each earning hardware in the girls’ JV race.
The Rams are back in action on Thursday, when they travel to Effingham. Hendrix said he’s looking for his team to continue improving.
“We do have work to do,” Hendrix said. “We want to go in to practice and keep getting better every day. Tonight was a good test to see where we are and where we need to be.”
