The city of Lansing will again invite the community to celebrate for its seventh annual Brew, Blues and Bar-B-Q Cook-off and the Lansing DAZE festival this weekend.

Like last year, all events will take place at DeSoto and Eisenhower roads, on the grounds of the Eisenhower Crossing retail center. Nolan Sunderman, economic development coordinator and director of the Convention and Visitors Bureau for Lansing, said the location affords a lot of advantages, with ideal site layout and plenty of parking.

The festival will also again take place the same weekend as the Kansas Sampler Festival, being held just north down the road at Ray Miller Park. Sunderman said he hopes the two events can again be mutually beneficial.

“We had a great turnout last year,” he said.

Starting at 6 p.m. Friday, the festivities will include children’s inflatables, games and rides and a performance at 7 p.m. by Kansas City-based rhythm and blues singer Mary Bridget Davies.

At 9:30 p.m. Friday night, Sunderman said the city will be bringing back a festival favorite from years’ past — a fireworks display.

Lansing DAZE begins the next day at 7 a.m. with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Lansing Kiwanis Club at Lansing High School. Commercial, non-profit organization and more than 30 craft booths will be set up starting at 9 a.m. at the festival grounds and will be open until 4 p.m. The Lansing DAZE car and cycle show will also be open during that time. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the children’s inflatables and games will again be open and available.

The quilt show will also be open at the Lansing Activities Center.

The second of the festival’s bands, local blues group Southern Reign, will perform at the festival grounds starting at 11 a.m.

At that time, the people’s choice barbecue competition, one officially sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, will begin. Sunderman said those attending the festival will have a chance to sample and vote for their own favorite barbecue styles from contestants, both local and beyond.

“We have teams from quite a few different areas,” he said.

Sunderman said the number of those teams has also risen this year to 36. The awards for the competition will be at 3:30 p.m. that day.

Like the previous years, admission to the events will be free. For more information, contact the Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau at 913-727-5488 or cvb@lansing.ks.us.
