Lindi Young was the only medalist for the Leavenworth cross country team at its first meet on Saturday in Manhattan, Young clocking a time of 17 minutes 24 seconds in the 4K varsity girls’ race to place 17th. The top 20 runners medaled in each race.
For Young, a sophomore who spent part of last season nursing an injury, the early medal is a good sign, said head coach Willis Willmeth.
“Last year she was hurt for quite a while ... and I know she did a lot of running over the summer, but I didn’t know where she’d be,” Willmeth said of his top female finisher. “I knew she was working hard, but to come out and go 17th overall, I was real pleased for her. That’s a good stepping stone for her, especially since she didn’t run all of last year since she was hurt.”
The medal also came, Willmeth added, on a pretty tough course.
“It’s pretty demanding, it used to be the state course before that moved to Lawrence,” Willmeth said. “It used to be a huge meet because of that (being the state site).”
Young’s finish helped the Leavenworth girls’ varsity team to a ninth-place finish. Madison Schoen came in 27th overall in the division with a time of 17:49. The final three varsity girls came in 63rd, 64th and 65th. Anna Salvatorelli clocked a 21:10, Alex Farley a 21:13 and Jacqueline Wendt a 21:21 to round out the Lady Pioneers squad.
In the girls’ junior varsity race freshman Briana Bressman clocked the third-fastest overall time for Leavenworth’s girls on the day. Her run of 19:58 placed her 33rd in the JV girls’ event.
“She did a pretty nice job for her first race,” Willmeth said. “She really did a nice job.”
For the boys’ team, which finished 11th out of 15 teams on the day, Levi Denney led the way with a time of 18:26 to place 37th. Kevin Remmenga was 46th overall in 18:42 and Nathan Salvatorelli came across in 19:20 to place 58th. Noah Easterling was 65th in 19:49 with Josh Camarena in 74th with his time of 20:23. Jacob Colver finished out the boys’ varsity squad for the Manhattan Invitational, going 80th in 21:21.
The Pioneers also had a solid performance by the top junior varsity boys’ runner, Wendall Horton, who’s 34th-place time of 20:18 was the fifth best of any Leavenworth boy at the meet. In the 4K C-team race, Leavenworth’s Taz Tucker clocked a 16:52 to place 28th.
“We’ll probably have some movement for next week,” Willmeth said. “Some of them, I know it was their first race and they were getting their feet wet and getting back into the swing of things. I was happy with them.”
As the start to the season, Willmeth added, he was happy with the results.
“Overall, I was fairly pleased,” the Leavenworth coach said. “The kids were pretty pleased. We have some kids who are ahead of where they were last year at this time and that’s a great thing.”
Next up for the Pioneers is the Topeka West Invitational next Saturday.
“I’m looking forward to that Topeka West Invitational next week, to see what we can do and how we improve,” Willmeth said. “I want to see how much better they get after having run a race.”
