Last year, Elan McCabe was eliminated in the first round of the Leavenworth County Spelling Bee. But this year, he went home as the champion.

“I feel very excited,” McCabe said after finishing first in Friday’s bee.

The sixth-grader from Xavier Catholic School won the 52nd annual Leavenworth County Spelling Bee after correctly spelling “protagonist.”

McCabe said he enjoys reading and always has been a good speller.

He studied ahead of Friday’s bee and his father offered him tips such as focus on the origin of the word.

Thirty-seven students in grades five through eight participated in this year’s bee. The event is organized each year by the Leavenworth Area Retired School Personnel Association.

“I thought the quality of spellers was superb,” said Marilyn Michalls, coordinator of the bee.

She also said the “audience was so respectful this year.”

The prize for winning the Leavenworth County Spelling Bee is a $100 savings bond provided by the Leavenworth Times. The second-place prize is a $50 savings bond provided by LARSPA. The third-place prize is a dictionary from the Lansing Kiwanis Club.

Even though he won the County Spelling Bee, McCabe won’t be able to advance to the Sunflower Spelling Bee scheduled for March 17 in Great Bend. That’s because McCabe’s school has to be enrolled in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in order for him to compete in March’s state level event.

A website for the Sunflower Spelling Bee does not list Xavier among the “registered schools” for Leavenworth County.

Michalls said Xavier did not paid a $109 fee that was required for one of its students to be able to advance to the state bee. The deadline for paying the fee has passed.

Jakob Foley, who finished second in Friday’s bee, will be able to advance. He is a fifth-grader at Tonganoxie Middle School.

“I’m really glad that I’m going to be able to go to state,” he said.

Michalls said two students from qualifying schools could advance from the Leavenworth County Spelling Bee.

Four students initially tied for third place, so they competed in a “spell down” to determine which of them would advance to the bee in Great Bend.

Ryan Stalcup, a student at Basehor-Linwood Middle School, won the “spell down” and took the third place prize in the County Bee.
