Joseph Henry Abel, 86, Leavenworth, Kansas passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at home under hospice care.

Joseph Henry Abel, 86, Leavenworth, Kansas passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at home under hospice care. He was born at Easton, Kansas on August 4, 1930 to Joseph L. and Alvina (Kreutzer) Abel. Joe served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954 in Germany and France. While in Munich, Germany, he met his wife, Ute Barbara (Hochholzner) Abel.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Lester Kenneth Abel and his wife Mildred. He is survived by his wife and two children, Herb (Margie) Abel, Adele (Chris) Hodgdon, three grandchildren Hilary Abel, Joel and Pierce Hodgdon.
Joe retired from Civil Service at Fort Leavenworth serving as a Telephone Supervisor. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 55 years, serving in many roles, including High School Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and maintenance board member. Joe and Ute also served as a sponsor for International Military Students for 15 years at the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth.
Joe enjoyed refinishing old furniture, repairing small antique equipment, appliances and woodworking. He was an avid reader and crossword puzzle worker.
The family would like to thank everyone, especially Connie and Jerry Barnes, Ralph Dix, Larry and Sharon Dedeke and Pastor Damian Snyder for their loving support during Joe’s four month illness.
Service was held Monday, April 24, 2017. Memorial contributions are suggested to Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society or Trinity Lutheran Church. Arrangements entrusted to Davis Funeral Chapel.
