Charles "Butch" Nelson Fitzhugh Jr., 68, of Leavenworth, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at his home.

Charles "Butch" Nelson Fitzhugh Jr., 68, of Leavenworth, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at his home. He was born March 13, 1949, in Leavenworth, the son of Charles Nelson and Virginia (Dixon) Fitzhugh Sr.
On September 2, 2005, in Las Vegas, Nev., Charles married Virginia Conley. She survives at the home. He is also survived by his children, Charles (Maggie) Fitzhugh III of Leavenworth, and Angela Fitzhugh of Kansas City, Mo.; three step children, Tamika Conley of Columbia S.C., Shanika Conley and Cameron Richards both of Leavenworth; two sisters, Helen (Larry) Haley of Three Rivers, Mich., and Val Doris (Tom) Payne of Lake Havasu, Ariz; two brothers, Kenneth Fitzhugh of Dallas Ga., and Eric (Anna) Fitzhugh of Leavenworth; his step-mother, Pauline Taylor Fitzhugh of Leavenworth; eight grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, step-siblings, in-law's and other extended family.
Charles was proceeded in death by his parents; a sister, Karen Green; a brother, Darryl Fitzhugh Sr.; and a granddaughter, SaVonna Fitzhugh-Collins.
On Feb. 20, 1968, Charles joined the United States Navy, ending his career as an Navel Airman, E-3 on Dec. 1, 1971. After the military he worked as a cook for the Veterans Administration in Leavenworth. Charles retired from the VA on June 3, 2004, after 32 years of service.
Charles loved fishing, camping and spending time with his family and friends.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 12 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
