Robert E. (Bob) Shanklin, 79, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away, Oct. 30, 2017.

Robert E. (Bob) Shanklin, 79, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away, Oct. 30, 2017. He was born Sept. 9, 1938, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Charles and Vernie Shanklin.

He spent the majority of his life in Kansas City and Leavenworth. An Eagle Scout and graduate of Wyandotte High School, Bob was a gifted tennis player, teacher, and umpire, who played throughout Europe for the US Army tennis team during his military service as a border guard in Germany. Bob had a passion for military history and cherished the later years of his career working with retiring military officers transitioning to civilian life. Bob possessed an uncanny ability to tell a joke, was quick with a smile and easily made friends with those around him. His genuine charm and loving spirit will be missed by his family.

Bob is survived by his wife, Trish Shanklin. He is also survived by his first wife, Chris Shanklin; and their children Kirstin (Rick) Hadel, MaKaela Carter, Kent (Stephanie) Shanklin; grandchildren, Madison, Weston, Trinity and Isabelle; a brother, Charles; sister-in-law Barbara; a niece and nephew; and other extended family, including Trish’s son, Rob Cassube, daughter Ann Albertson and step-son Scott Finn.

The family wishes to thank Life Care Center of Kansas City, Kan. where he spent the last few years of his life, along with the outstanding doctors, nurses, and medical staff of Providence Hospital, where he was considered a friend to so many and who’s genuine concern for Bob was evident. A special thanks also to Heartland Hospice.

A private burial at Leavenworth National Cemetery will be at a later date. Arrangements in care of R.L. Leintz Funeral Home.
