Jean Ellen Vance, aged 88, died peacefully November 2, 2017, in Borger, Texas. She was born on February 4, 1929 at her family’s farm home in rural Bedford, Iowa, to Carl and Jennie Newkirk.
At an early age she demonstrated a talent for the piano. At age 6 she would play “The Sidewalks of New York,” as her father danced to the song. Piano was her lifelong passion.
Immediately after high school, Jean earned a teaching certificate from Missouri State Teacher’s College and taught in one-room country schools for three years.
She met Joseph Vance in 1948 and they were married in 1950, a marriage that was to last 51 years. They moved to Leavenworth, Kansas in October, 1960, following Joseph’s career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Jean had two sons, Jason and Jerald. Raising her children and maintaining her home became her lifelong vocations. She enjoyed being a room mother and a Cub Scout den mother. She attended church services with her children at the First United Methodist Church, Leavenworth. Later in life she enjoyed the Sing-A-Long choir at the Leavenworth Council on Aging.
She was pre-deceased by her husband. In addition to her sons, she is survived by a daughter-in-law, Margaret Vance, her grandchildren, Michael Vance, Megan Vance, Gabriel Vance, and Katie Lingor, and her husband Kamron Lingor, great grandchildren, Blaise Williams, and Brooks Lingor. Additional survivors include her sister, Anne Meek, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jean will be remembered for her loving devotion to her husband and children. She had a heart of gold. She regularly traveled to Blockton, Iowa, to clean her brother Dale’s home in his later years. Her selfless devotion to others was a model that all would admire. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at the Davis Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth, Kansas, at 2 p.m. on November 24, 2017. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Heritage Center, 109 Delaware, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048.
