Dr. John C. Hammeke M.D., 90, of Leavenworth, died, Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at St. Luke's Cushing Hospital.
Dr. John C. Hammeke M.D., 90, of Leavenworth, died, Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at St. Luke’s Cushing Hospital. He was born in Ellinwood, Kan., the son of John Thomas and Mary Helen (Schartz) Hammeke.
He joined the Navy at the age of 17 and served on an aircraft carrier in World War II. Dr. Hammeke graduated from St. Benedicts and then attended the University of Kansas where he studied microbiology. He received a Medical Degree from the University of Arkansas and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at St. Vincent’s Clinic in Little Rock, Ark. He was also honored to attend Harvard Medical School the last three months of his residency.
Dr. Hammeke served the communities of Atchison and Leavenworth for many years as an Ophthalmologist. He also traveled to Moscow and Russia to observe ophthalmic laser surgery.
He is survived by a daughter, Mondeen Snyder; two sons, Mark Hammeke and Greg Hammeke; five grandchildren, Heather Mosbacher, Heidi Mosbacher, Justin Hammeke, Damon Hammeke and Cassie Fisher; eight great-grandchildren, Lucia Mosbacher, Mia Mosbacher, Aris Mosbacher, Rylee Hammeke, Kaiden Hammeke, Taylor Heim, Tallulah Fisher and Corbin Fisher. Dr. Hammeke is also survived by his former wife and friend, Geri Hammeke; two sister-in-laws, Delores Christianson and Catherine Hammeke; and his two sisters, Sister Imelda Rose and Coleen Younger.
There will be a private family burial. Arrangements in care of R.L. Leintz Funeral Home.
