Col (Ret.), U.S. Army Jess Byrd Hendricks, Jr., Rochester, New York, passed away Saturday, January 27 at the age of 91.

Col (Ret.), U.S. Army Jess Byrd Hendricks, Jr., Rochester, New York, passed away   Saturday, January 27 at the age of 91. Jess was born June 27, 1926 in Gulfport, Mississippi to the late Martha Lester Willis Hendricks and Jess Byrd Hendricks, Sr. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated with the class of 1948. He earned a masters degree from Tulane and did postgraduate work at Brown. He will be buried in the West Point cemetery with full military honors.
Jess served 28 years in the Army as an Armor Officer and commanded at every level up through brigade including 14th Cavalry, 3rd Armored Division, and 2nd Armored Division. He served in the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. He also taught at the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth where he served as Director of both DTAC and DCOM. He served overseas in Germany and Vietnam. He was twice awarded the Legion of Merit. Jess retired as a Colonel to Leavenworth, Kansas. After his military service he held business positions in Kansas City and Leavenworth. Jess and wife Jo Ann lived surrounded by friends in Leavenworth for 38 years before relocating to Rochester, New York to be near family. A true southern gentleman, Jess was a frustrated golfer, classical music buff, cat lover, avid gardener and would never, ever, kowtow to the king of Ohio. He was happiest when he was surrounded by family.
Jess is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jo Ann Durham Hendricks; son, Jess Byrd Hendricks III (Ewa); daughter, Gabriel Pursell (David); son, Joel Hendricks (Christine) and daughter, Martha Hendricks.
